This week and next Tuesday June 10th the Pontilly Association will
distribute $50,000 worth of sod free of charge to seniors in the
Pontchartrain Part and Gentilly Woods area. One hundred thirty- one
seniors fifty-five and older qualified back in April with proofs of age
and residency at the Pontilly Disaster Recovery Center. The sod
giveaway came through the efforts of King Wells, Senator Derrick
Shepherd and J. P. Morrell with funding provided by a grant from the
state. The project is meant to assist seniors in recovering and
rebuilding their lives after Katrina. "Many more senior residents
requested sod assistance." said
Audrey Browder, Project Manager for the Pontilly Association. "We are
hoping for additional funding to continue the assistance in the future
and we are composing a waiting list. Seniors can sign up at the
Pontilly Disaster Recovery Center 3869 Gentilly
Blvd., Suite C Monday to Friday between 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM or call
(504) 286-5850. "
